Upcoming X++ Compiler Change

Upcoming X++ Compiler Change in Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations

Microsoft has announced an important X++ compiler change that Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations developers should be aware of. Starting with version 10.0.50, the X++ compiler will no longer tolerate the legacy client and server method modifiers and will generate compilation errors whenever these keywords are present in your code.

If your organization maintains customizations, ISV solutions, or legacy AX code that has been upgraded over the years, now is the perfect time to review and clean up your codebase.

Microsoft Announces Deprecation of client and server Keywords

As part of Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to modernize and simplify the X++ language, the long-standing client and server method modifiers are being retired.

The transition timeline is straightforward:

VersionBehavior
10.0.48Compiler warnings introduced
10.0.50Compiler errors introduced
Future ReleaseKeywords removed from language grammar entirely

This means any code containing these modifiers will fail compilation once your environment upgrades to version 10.0.50.

Why Are These Keywords Being Removed?

Many Dynamics AX veterans will remember a time when the client and server modifiers influenced where code executed.

However, in modern Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations architecture, these keywords have been inert for years. They no longer impact application behavior, execution context, or runtime processing.

In other words:

  • The compiler ignores them
  • The runtime ignores them
  • Removing them has zero functional impact

Microsoft is now removing these obsolete language constructs to keep the X++ language cleaner and easier to maintain.

What Developers Need to Do

The required action is simple:

Before
public client static void myMethod()
{
// Business logic
}

After
public static void myMethod()
{
// Business logic
}

Likewise
Before
public server void processOrder()
{
// Order processing logic
}

After
public void processOrder()
{
// Order processing logic
}
No additional code changes are required.

Impact on Existing Solutions

Customizations

Most custom Finance & Operations customizations developed in recent years are unlikely to be affected. However, older code that originated from AX 2009 or AX 2012 projects may still contain these modifiers.

ISV Solutions

Independent Software Vendors should start reviewing their solution packages now to avoid upgrade issues when customers move to version 10.0.50.

Upgraded AX Environments

Organizations that have migrated from AX 2012 often carry legacy code forward. These environments are the most likely to encounter compiler errors after upgrading.

Why This Matters for Future Upgrades

While the actual code change is minor, ignoring these warnings today can create unnecessary upgrade blockers tomorrow.

Developers who proactively clean up their codebases will benefit from:

  • Smoother upgrades to version 10.0.50 and beyond
  • Reduced technical debt
  • Cleaner and more maintainable X++ code
  • Better alignment with Microsoft’s current development standards

Conclusion

This change is another example of Microsoft’s continued modernization of the Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations development platform. Although the client and server keywords once played an important role in AX development, they have long since become obsolete.

With compiler errors arriving in version 10.0.50, organizations should begin removing these modifiers immediately to ensure a seamless upgrade experience.

The good news is that the fix is simple: remove the keyword and keep the rest of your code unchanged.
